Description

The Cattelan Italia Globe Coffee Table is a low-profile glass-top coffee table defined by a single large spherical base — available in Polished Stainless Steel or Travertine Marble — positioned centrally beneath a broad, gently curved Clear Glass top. Available in two sizes — 130 × 70 × 36h cm (elongated rectangular) and 140 × 120 × 36h cm (near-square, wide format) — both versions share an identical 36 cm height and the same fixed Clear Glass top. The spherical base is the Globe's defining formal element: a single perfect sphere supporting a wide horizontal glass plane creates an inherently unstable-looking but structurally resolved composition — the sphere's curvature meets the flat underside of the glass at a single tangent point, and the visual tension between the broad flat top and the compact rounded base is the primary source of the table's sculptural character. The choice between Polished Stainless Steel and Travertine Marble for the sphere determines the entire tonal and material register of the composition. Made in Italy by Cattelan Italia.

Key Features

  • Spherical Base — Two Material Options: The single spherical base is the Globe's defining design element — available in Polished Stainless Steel (mirror-bright, reflective, cool) or Travertine Marble (warm beige-cream with open porous texture, natural). These two options represent fundamentally different compositional approaches: the steel sphere is a precision industrial object; the travertine sphere is a natural stone sculpture. Both support the same Clear Glass top but create entirely different tonal and material environments beneath it.
  • Fixed Clear Glass Top: The gently curved Clear Glass top is fixed across both sizes and both base options — it is not available in any alternative finish. The full transparency of the glass top is essential to the Globe's design: it allows the spherical base to remain fully visible from above, making the structural logic of the single-sphere support immediately legible. An opaque top would conceal the sphere entirely and negate the table's primary design statement.
  • Two Sizes — Same Height: The 130 × 70 cm format is elongated and directional — a relatively narrow rectangular glass plane that emphasises the length of the table and creates a clear primary axis in the room. The 140 × 120 cm format is near-square and wide — a broad, expansive glass surface that reads more as a symmetric centrepiece than a directional piece. Both are 36 cm high. The sphere is the same size in both formats — only the glass top dimensions change.
  • Low-Lounge Profile — 36 cm: At 36 cm height, the Globe sits at the lower end of coffee table heights — well suited to deep, low-profile modular sofas and seating systems where a conventional height table would sit disproportionately high within the group.
  • Made in Italy — Cattelan Italia: Precision-manufactured in Italy; the Travertine marble sphere is hand-selected natural stone with inherent variation in tone and veining between individual pieces.

Sizes

Two sizes — 130 × 70 × 36h cm and 140 × 120 × 36h cm. Both share the same 36 cm height and fixed Clear Glass top. Base finish: Polished Stainless Steel or Travertine Marble — available in both sizes. The sphere base dimensions are identical in both size configurations.
130 × 70 × 36h
Globe — 130 × 70 (Elongated) 130 cm / 51.2" × 70 cm / 27.6"
36h cm / 14.2"
140 × 120 × 36h
Globe — 140 × 120 (Wide) 140 cm / 55.1" × 120 cm / 47.2"
36h cm / 14.2"

The 130 × 70 cm format creates a directional, elongated composition — the glass top's length-to-width ratio (130:70, approximately 1.86:1) is strongly horizontal, emphasising the table's long axis and creating a clear primary viewing direction. At this format, the sphere sits below the centre of the glass plane, and the glass extends significantly beyond the sphere on both the long sides — the cantilever of the glass beyond the sphere is most pronounced in this format, which amplifies the floating, tensioned quality of the composition. The 70 cm depth keeps the table from projecting too far into the seating group in narrower room configurations. The 140 × 120 cm format is near-square — the 140:120 ratio (approximately 1.17:1) is close to symmetric and creates a more equidirectional, centrepiece-oriented composition. This is the more expansive and room-dominant of the two formats — at 140 × 120 cm the glass surface provides a very generous platform for a full large-scale seating group, and the sphere beneath the near-square top reads as more centrally positioned from all four sides. At this scale the Globe becomes a genuinely primary centrepiece rather than an accent — its 108.5 kg total weight (with travertine base) reflects the substantial scale of the piece. The sphere is identical in both size formats — its relationship to the glass top changes depending on which size is chosen, as the glass extends further from the sphere in the 130 × 70 cm format.

Finish Options

Single fixed top option — Clear Glass — consistent across both sizes and both base options.

Clear Glass Clear Glass Top — Fixed

The Clear Glass top is gently curved tempered glass — the slight curvature of the top surface is a deliberate design detail that softens the otherwise strictly geometric relationship between the flat glass plane and the sphere below, introducing a subtle formal resonance between the curved base and the slightly curved top. Full transparency is essential: it keeps the glass top visually weightless at a scale — up to 140 × 120 cm — where any opaque material would create significant visual mass and obscure the sphere. The transparency also means that the sphere is always visible from above, ensuring the Globe's primary design statement — a broad horizontal plane balanced on a single sphere — is legible from all positions within the seating group.

Two sphere options — available in both the 130 × 70 cm and 140 × 120 cm formats.

Polished Stainless Steel Polished Stainless Steel Base Sphere
Travertine Marble Travertine Marble Base Sphere

Polished Stainless Steel sphere — mirror-polished steel ground into a perfect sphere. The mirror-polished surface creates a convex reflective form — the sphere reflects a distorted, compressed image of the room and the glass top above it from all viewing angles. This reflective quality makes the steel sphere a visually dynamic element: its surface changes constantly as ambient light and room conditions change. The steel sphere is significantly lighter than the travertine sphere (4.5 kg vs 50 kg in its shipping parcel), which means the 130 × 70 cm configuration with steel base ships at 40.5 kg total — far more manageable than the travertine equivalent at 86 kg. The steel base is the more contemporary, industrially precise of the two options. Travertine Marble sphere — natural travertine quarried and ground into a sphere, with the characteristic open-pore texture and warm beige-cream colouring of travertine preserved across the curved surface. The travertine sphere is a fundamentally different object from the steel sphere: where the steel sphere is reflective and optically active, the travertine sphere is matte and textural — it absorbs light rather than reflecting it, and its warm beige-cream tone creates a strong material contrast with the cool transparency of the glass above. The porous open-grain texture of travertine is particularly visible across a spherical surface, where the curvature continuously varies the orientation of the stone's natural patterning relative to the viewer. As natural stone, each travertine sphere will have unique tonal variation and veining — no two are identical. The travertine base is significantly heavier: the 130 × 70 configuration ships at 86 kg total; the 140 × 120 at 108.5 kg.

Materials & Construction

Clear Glass Top

The gently curved top is tempered clear glass — hardened for impact resistance and safety, with a slight convex curvature that introduces a subtle formal relationship with the spherical base below. The full transparency of the glass is the critical design decision: at the Globe's scale (up to 140 × 120 cm), any opaque material would create visual mass and block the view to the sphere. The glass top is fixed in both size formats and across both base options — it is the one element that does not vary in any Globe configuration.

Polished Stainless Steel Sphere

The steel sphere is precision-ground to a perfect spherical form and mirror-polished to the highest grade of steel surface finish. The convex mirror surface creates a continuous, dynamically changing reflection of the room as the viewer's position shifts — a behaviour that is unique to a spherical reflective surface and that makes the steel base an optically active element within the room's spatial composition. At 4.5 kg, the steel sphere is the lighter base option — it contributes minimal structural weight to the table's overall mass, making the glass top (36 kg for the 130 × 70 format, 58.5 kg for the 140 × 120 format) the dominant weight component.

Travertine Marble Sphere

Travertine is a sedimentary limestone characterised by its open, porous surface texture and warm beige-cream colouring — produced by the deposition of calcium carbonate in mineral-rich springs. Ground into a sphere, the travertine's characteristic pore structure and warm veining wrap continuously around the curved surface, creating a textural richness that reads differently from every viewing angle. At 50 kg, the travertine sphere is the dominant weight component of the travertine Globe configuration — the combination of the sphere's mass and the glass top's weight means the 140 × 120 travertine Globe ships at 108.5 kg total, making delivery access and installation planning important considerations for this configuration.
