The warmth of the walnut creates a close tonal relationship with the dark Graphite Embossed base — both are in the warm-dark register, producing a cohesive, unified composition. The contrast between the two is textural rather than tonal: the open wood grain of the walnut top against the micro-embossed metal surface of the base. Burned Oak — thermally treated oak with a deep charcoal-grey-black surface produced by the controlled charring of the wood's outer layer, which darkens the grain structure and carbonises the surface to create a dense, tactile matte finish. Burned Oak is the darkest top option — its near-black surface creates the highest tonal unity with the Graphite Embossed steel base (both dark, both matte) while simultaneously revealing the wood's grain structure in high relief against the darkened ground. The top is produced in solid wood — Canaletto Walnut, Burned Oak, or Natural Oak — with the surface treatment (natural, thermally burned, or natural oil-finished) applied to the specific character of each species. The top is the only element that varies across configurations and the dominant weight component in all three sizes: 29 kg (140×80 cm), 38 kg (160×90 cm), and 66 kg (200×100 cm). The very large 200×100 cm top panel at 66 kg requires careful two-person handling during placement and assembly.
Very Low 30 cm Profile
At 30 cm height the Idem is at the lower boundary of functional coffee table height — appropriate for deep modular sofas with seat heights of 35–42 cm, where a conventional 38–40 cm coffee table would position the surface too close to or level with the seat. The 30 cm height combined with the wide rectangular top and the horizontal emphasis of the intersecting base creates a strongly ground-hugging, platform-like object that expands the perceived floor area of the room rather than interrupting it — particularly effective in large open-plan interiors where a taller table would create a more vertically prominent spatial division within the seating group.
