Description
The Cattelan Italia Biplane Coffee Table is an architectural composition defined by its dual overlapping glass surfaces, bridge-inspired ceramic body panels, Titanium or Black Embossed steel frame, and sculptural conical feet. Designed by Paolo Cattelan, the Biplane is available in two formats — Rectangular (162 × 82 × 40h cm) and Square (122 × 122 × 40h cm) — both sharing the same finish vocabulary and structural design language. The two glass planes — upper and lower — create the table's defining formal quality: depth, transparency, and a layered horizontal composition in which the ceramic body panels, visible through the glass, contribute material richness and colour from within the structure rather than from its surface. The glass top is available in Clear or Fumé; the ceramic body panels are offered in Makalu, Breccia, Colosseo, and Taj Mahal; the frame and feet are available in Titanium Embossed or Black Embossed lacquered steel. The Rectangular format is elongated and directional — suited to long sofas and rectangular room layouts where a clear central axis is needed; the Square format anchors equally from all sides — suited to symmetric seating groups and larger open-plan spaces. Both formats share an identical 40 cm height. Made in Italy by Cattelan Italia.
Key Features
- Dual Glass Top Surfaces: The Biplane's defining structural feature — two overlapping horizontal glass planes (upper and lower) separated by the ceramic body and frame, creating visual depth, transparency, and a layered floating quality from all viewing angles. Available in Clear Glass (fully transparent, maximises visibility of the ceramic body) or Fumé Glass (smoke-tinted, softens the view through to the layer below and adds tonal depth to the overall composition).
- Ceramic Body Panels — Four Finishes: The internal body panels visible through and beneath the glass surfaces are produced in sintered ceramic — scratch, heat, UV, and stain resistant — in four curated finishes: Makalu (soft grey-white with fine veining), Breccia (warm terracotta-red and cream), Colosseo (warm beige-grey with dense veining), and Taj Mahal (warm creamy white with flowing veining). The ceramic finish determines the dominant colour and material character of the entire composition as viewed through the glass.
- Titanium or Black Embossed Steel Frame: Micro-embossed lacquered steel in Titanium Embossed (cool titanium tone, micro-textured surface) or Black Embossed (dark, micro-textured lacquer). The frame provides structural integrity for both glass layers and introduces a precise, industrially refined material note to the composition. The same finish is applied to the conical feet.
- Sculptural Conical Feet: Tapered conical feet in the selected frame finish — structurally stable, visually slender, and consistent with the conical-base design vocabulary used across the Cattelan Italia collection. At 40 cm height, the feet elevate the glass planes to a conventional coffee table height with a considered, unhurried proportion.
- Two Formats — Rectangular and Square: The 162 × 82 cm Rectangular is elongated and directional; the 122 × 122 cm Square anchors symmetrically from all sides. Both are 40 cm high, sharing the same finish options and structural design language — enabling matched pairing within the same space if required.
- Designed by Paolo Cattelan — Made in Italy: Manufactured by Cattelan Italia with precision engineering and premium materials throughout.
Formats & Sizes
40h cm / 15.7"
40h cm / 15.7"
The Rectangular format at 162 × 82 cm is the more spatially directional of the two — its elongated proportions create a clear long axis that organises a sofa group along one dominant line, pairing naturally with linear furniture arrangements and rectangular rooms. The two glass planes at this format stretch the Biplane's layered composition across a generous horizontal span, with the ceramic body panels visible as a continuous surface beneath. The Square format at 122 × 122 cm is symmetrical and equally prominent from all four sides of the seating group — suited to central placement within symmetric or circular seating configurations, and to larger open-plan spaces where a single strong geometric form is needed to anchor the lounge without favouring one direction over another. Both formats are 40 cm high — a conventional coffee table height that positions both glass planes at a practical, accessible elevation for everyday use.
Finish Options
All finish combinations are available across both the Rectangular and Square formats.
The top surface glass determines the transparency and tonal register of the entire dual-layer composition.
Clear Glass
Glass Top
Fumé Glass
Glass Top
Clear Glass maximises visibility through both glass planes to the ceramic body panels within — the composition reads as fully open and transparent, with the ceramic finish the dominant visual material. Fumé Glass introduces a smoke tint that softens and filters the view through to the ceramic layer below — the tonal depth of the Fumé adds a layer of atmospheric quality to the composition and creates a more enclosed, richly layered visual register.

Makalu — soft grey-white with fine, restrained veining; the most neutral and spatially recessive of the four options, creating a cool, considered composition that lets the glass geometry lead. Breccia — warm terracotta-red and cream brecciated marble; the most characterful and classically expressive option — its warm tones create a rich, warm-tonal interior when viewed through Clear Glass, and a more enveloped, moody composition with Fumé. Colosseo — warm beige-grey with dense veining; grounded and versatile, the most universally adaptable of the four options across both glass and frame finish combinations. Taj Mahal — warm creamy white with soft flowing veining; luminous and refined — the flowing pattern creates a quiet, organic movement beneath the glass that pairs most naturally with Clear Glass and Titanium Embossed frame for a fully warm, light composition.
Lacquered steel with micro-embossed texture — applied to both the frame and the conical feet.

Black Embossed
Frame & Feet
Titanium Embossed — cool, precise, and industrially refined; its micro-textured surface differentiates it from flat-lacquered steel and introduces subtle material complexity at close range. Works most naturally with the cooler ceramic options (Makalu, Taj Mahal) and with Clear Glass for a fully open, contemporary composition. Black Embossed — dark, graphic, and bold; maximises the contrast between the structural frame and the ceramic body panels above it. Most effective with Fumé Glass for a richly layered dark composition, or with Breccia or Colosseo where the warmth of the ceramic provides tonal counterpoint to the dark frame.
Materials & Construction
Dual Glass Construction
The Biplane uses two distinct glass layers — an upper surface glass and a lower glass plane — separated by the ceramic body and frame structure. Both layers are tempered for impact resistance. The structural separation of the two planes creates the table's defining visual quality: a horizontal layered depth that changes character depending on viewing angle, ambient light, and the glass finish selected. The lower glass panel is the structural bridge between the ceramic body panels and contributes significantly to the composition's transparency and depth.
Sintered Ceramic Panels
The body panels are produced in sintered ceramic — formed under extreme heat and pressure from natural minerals into a dense, non-porous surface with exceptional resistance to scratches, heat, UV, and staining. Within the Biplane structure, the ceramic panels are framed by the steel structure and visible through both glass layers — their finish character (colour, veining, surface texture) is the dominant material reference point for the entire table's visual identity, which makes ceramic finish selection the most consequential single decision in the configuration process.
